Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ..."unconscious recognition" may be taken to be the fundamental instinct of self-preservation arising to dominate the personality in a powerful protective effort. Just as an old and over-loyal servant might on a critical occasion intervene against the will and positive order of his master and remove him bodily from a threatening danger, so this elemental instinct, deeper than all training, by depriving the soldier of some function necessary to his further participation, compels his withdrawal from an environment dangerous to his life or sanity. And this, without consultation of his conscious will or approval, or even directly cou nter to this authority. Shell-shock is thus seen to be the result of a conflict between the soldier's primitive subconscious self and his trained and disciplined self, in which conflict the former betrays the latter in the interest of the preservation of both. Now from the foregoing it will be seen that there must be for every man a certain "point of tolerance," beyond which any situation will become, for him, intolerable, and beyond which this protective mechanism will come into play. This point will, of course, vary widely with a hundred factors, among which the strongest will be primitive vital instinct, general physical and psychical stamina, and will power. One man, of stern training and firm mental and moral balance, will stand up through months of the most terrific strain of trench life; while another, made of poorer stuff, will develop a self-protective "shell-shock" before he has been under shell-fire at all.
